The 2023 Austin Business Journal list of local commercial developers highlights the firms shaping the skyline of Austin and the numbers are still climbing. The list tracks activity across the Austin area. Firms must have offices in the Austin area to be eligible. Austin area includes Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop, Burnet and Caldwell counties. When tracking square feet, ABJ categorizes developments according to office, industrial and retail. Subsets, such as medical office buildings and restaurants are included as office and retail respectively. Overall, listmakers reported a total of 17.6 million commercial s.f. developed in the Austin area during 2022. This represents 2.5 million more square feet developed compared to what listmakers reported the year before. Outside of Austin, these firms developed an additional 7.4 million s.f., which is also higher than the 4.2 million s.f. that was reported for 2021.
